Pitching Dominance Continues in South Jersey

Less than a week after a junior pitcher threw a no-hitter in his very first varsity start, two more local athletes have recorded similarly impressive feats.

Despite a tremendous pitching performance in the first game of the season, Holy Spirit’s Mike Di Ianni knew there was room for improvement. The senior allowed only two runs on four hits against Egg Harbor Township, but watched Eagles junior Misael Castillo dazzle Spartans hitters en route to a no-hitter in his first varsity start.

A little more than a week later, Di Ianni made good on his bid to improve on the mound. He struck out seven batters and only walked three for his first career no-hitter, a 2-0 victory over Mainland Regional. We asked the senior ace about what was working against the Mustangs, and how he’s hoping to temper expectations over the course of an entire season.

Here’s our exclusive interview with Holy Spirit Spartans senior pitcher, Mike Di Ianni

Another pitcher who’s also no stranger to near-perfection is Millville’s Cassidy Gorgo. The senior pitcher followed up a perfect game in 2013 with another memorable performance this season; she baffled Holy Spirit earlier this month as part of the second no-hitter of her career.

Gorgo struck out 10 batters in the convincing 14-0 victory, the second time she’s received a tremendous amount of run support to back her no-hitter on the mound. We asked her about the mentality of a pitcher facing a team with a big lead, and what went into her decision to join one of Divsion II’s best softball schools.

Here’s our South Jersey Sports Report interview with Millville Lady Thunderbolts senior pitcher Cassidy Gorgo

We’d also like to congratulate the South Jersey Athlete of the Week:

Mike Di Ianni

Baseball, Holy Spirit

The Spartans pitcher was provided with a 2-0 in the first inning against Mainland and it was more than enough offensive support. He tossed a complete-game no-hitter, striking out seven batters in the process.
