The Philadelphia Eagles announced they have waived the following 10 players:

WR Elvis Akpla

S Wade Bonner

DE Xavier Brown

WR Brian Hernandez (injured)

WR McKay Jacobson

WR Tiger Jones

G Alfred McCullough

DB Tom Nelson (injured)

CB Kevin Thomas

OT Thomas Welch

My Take: No real surprises here, but the most surprising on this list is Kevin Thomas.  The Eagles acquired Thomas and a 2013 seventh-round pick from the Colts in exchange for LBs Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd.  Thomas was a 2010 third-round pick despite an injury-marred career at USC. He played 39 percent of the defensive snaps last season after losing his rookie year to an ACL tear.  However, the Eagles had depth at that position with Brandon Boykin, Joselio Hanson, Curtis Marsh and Brandon Hughes all ahead of him on the depth chart.

Xavier Brown had a solid camp, but never really had a shot to make this roster with the depth the Eagles have at defensive end - he should catch on elsewhere.  Elvis Akpla is another talented player who really had no shot to make the team with the depth the Eagles have at wide receiver.

Tom Nelson is a veteran special teams player who will find another job.

The Eagles roster now stands at 80 players. All NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 75 players by 4 pm ET on Monday, August 27. All clubs must cut down their rosters to 53 players by 9 pm ET on Friday, August 31.
