Think of him as a backup's backup.

Ray Emery is back with the Flyers...sort of. If they need to use him, they're in serious trouble. It will have meant that both Steve Mason and Anthony Stolarz are out of commission.

The 33-year-old goalie who served as Mason's backup last season signed a tryout with the Flyers Tuesday because they've lost Lehigh Valley Phantoms goalie Jason LaBarbera for the rest of the season, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

"Obviously with losing (Michal) Neuvirth, we felt like we had to have a little bit of depth," Hextall said Tuesday evening on a conference call with reporters. "Ray happened to be available and was willing to come in on a tryout."

"It's just so we have a third guy. We truly don't have a third guy with our depth. We've been working on this for a few days and looking at who's available and who might come in, Ray made sense."
