Phillies avoided arbitration with OF John Mayberry by agreeing to a one-year, $1.5875 million contract.

Despite agreeing to terms with Mayberry a contract, the Phillies are still searching for a fourth outfielder to be used in the role currently held by Mayberry.  Mayberry is coming off a disappointing .227, 11 home run and 39 RBI batting line in 134 games this past season.  He has pretty much reached his full potential and has been somewhat of a disappointment after showing flashes during the 2001 season when he smashed 15 homers in just 267 at-bats while hitting .273.

In 2012, the Phillies virtually handed Mayberry a chance at everyday playing time - which he handled with mixed reviews.  He's proved useful in the past, particularly against left-handed pitching and as a defensive replacement in the outfield and first base,
