Mainland junior Kyle Gerace has made his college choice - the pitcher is staying in state and will pitch for Rutgers University.

Gerace had a tremendous season for the Mustangs going 6-1 with one save and a 0.76 ERA and struck out 72 batters in 55 innings.  The big game pitcher struck out 13 as Mainland beat Toms River South 1-0 in the S.J. Group III semifinals last spring.

Gerace has been a name that local baseball fans have been hearing for sometime now.In 2011, a 13-year old Gerace was a member of the Atlantic Shore team that went to the Babe Ruth World Series, the team went back to the series in 2013.  Gerace started his high school career at St. Augustine Prep but transferred to Mainland as a sophomore and helped the Mustangs win the S.J. Group III title.

The Scarlet Knights were 19-35-1 and 7-17 in their first season in the Big Ten for baseball.
