For the first time this school year, a soccer player stepped up to claim honors as the 97.3 ESPN FM High School Athlete of the Week.

Middle Township goalie Tanner Kerr collected 49 percent of the total vote to finish first.

The senior shut out Cape May Tech last week, pushing the Panthers to 13-0 and solidifying his 11th shutout of the season. Middle Township has since improved to 14-0, including 12 shutout victories.

Kerr is the son of former Philadelphia Flyers great Tim Kerr.

He edged fellow soccer standout Steve Tobolski (Vineland), who accomplished a hat trick against Atlantic City. Emily Johnson (Wildwood Catholic cross country), Deandre Dennis (Holy Spirit football) and Stefon Bowman (Bridgeton football) rounded out the poll.

More than 10,000 votes were registered.

Be sure to look for a new list of Athlete of the Week candidates every Thursday. Vote early and often  through Saturday mornings. Tyler Donohue will announce the winner Saturdays at 11 a.m. on The South Jersey Sports Report (9-noon).
