Phillies acquired right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton from the Pirates for minor league pitcher David Whitehead.

Morton, 32, went 9-9 with a 4.81 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 96 strikeouts over 129 innings in 23 starts with the Pirates in 2015. His best season came back in 2011 when he won 10 games for the Pirates in 29 starts.

Morton should be a part of the Phillies starting rotation with Aaron Nola, Jeremy Hellickson as maybe the only givens at this point.  He has been a dependable starter for the Buccos the past seven seasons, leading all Pirates pitchers in wins (41), innings pitched (801.0), starts (142) and strikeouts (563).

To make room for Morton on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated right-hander A.J. Achter for assignment.
