The Phillies signed third baseman Josh Fields to a minor league contract.

Don't recognize the name?

The former top prospect was rated the 45th best prospect in baseball by Baseball America after being drafted by the Chicago White Sox.  He will look to reestablish himself in the Phillies organization but hasn't appeared in the majors since 2010 with the Kansas City Royals.
He failed to earn a promotion last season with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, playing in 133 games for the Albuquerque Isotopes, with a .322 average with 13 homers and 71 RBI.
As a rookie with the White Six in 2007, Fields mashed 23 home runs and drove in 67 runs in just 100 games.
He will presumably have a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training and a chance to make the big club as a right-handed bat off the bench.  He can also play first base and left field.
