Free agent outfielder Roger Bernadina has signed with the Phillies, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

 

Bernadina, 29, batted .178 with two home runs and six RBI in 85 games with the Washington Nationals this year.  He made 14 starts in left field, 12 in right field and three in center field.  Last season, Bernadina, a left-handed hitter, batted .291 with a .372 on-base percentage in 129 games for Washington.

 

A native of Curacao, Bernadina was originally signed by the Montreal Expos in November of 2001 as an amateur free agent.  In 468 career games, he has hit .243 with 25 home runs, 107 RBI and 56 stolen bases and made 113 starts in center field, 88 in left field and 78 in right field.  At Citizens Bank Park, he is a career .309 hitter in 22 games.

 

To make room for Bernadina on the 25-man roster, the Phillies have optioned Michael Martinez to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
