Phillies lose two yesterday

Mike Gill and Todd Ranck talk about the struggles of the Phillies over the weekend and went over an interesting story written by David Murphy. Murphy brings into question the moves Ruben Amaro made this off season, especially in the bullpen.  He relied on Antonio Bastardo, Mike Stutes, Jose Contreras, and a 33 year old Chad Qualls to get the games to closer Johnathan Papelbon.  Also, relying on John Mayberry, Jr to play everyday rather than sign Josh Willingham for $21M.  What moves, if any should the Phillies make to improve this team?  The Phillies begin a four game series tonight vs. the Pirates.

Brighthouse Field flooded

Mike and Todd talked about how bad the Phillies complex in Clearwater, FL was flooded over the weekend.  Phillies reliever Justin DeFratus tweeted a picture of the field flooded with water.  Chase Utley was down in Clearwater, but avoided T.S. Debby when he came north to play in his final rehab game in Lehigh Valley.  The goal is for him to be activated and in the Phillies lineup Wednesday vs. the Pirates.  What kind of Chase Utley will we see?  What are you more concerned with: his offense or defense?

Frank Seravalli talks trade

Philadelphia Flyers beat writer for the Philadelphia Daily News called in and talked about the James van Riemsdyk trade to Toronto in exchange for D Luke Schenn.  Seravalli said he wasnt too surprised by the trade and it could be a win-win for both teams.  Both players were in the dog house and a change of scenery could be perfect.  Injuries and inconsistent play did not help van Riemsdyk.  And if Matt Carle is not here, Schenn will fill a valuable role as an insurance policy.  On Bobby Ryan: he wants to come here, but the asking price is steep.  Jaromir Jagr remains still very much in play for the team as well.  Frank Seravalli covers the Flyers for the Philadelphia Daily News.  Read his blog.

Ryan Petzar LIVE from CBP

Our Phillies Insider Ryan Petzar called in live from the ballpark for tonight's Pirates/Phillies game and gave us an update on 2B Chase Utley.  Charlie Manuel said that once Utley returns, he will be batting in his usual 3rd spot in the batting order.  As for Utley's role on the team once he gets back?  No one knows.  Manuel is not happy with the performance from the "young" bullpen.  The Phillies first priority remains strengthening the bullpen.  Petzar then made a plea to our listeners: this season is NOT the managers fault at all.  Follow our Phillies Insider Ryan Petzar on Twitter.

Chase Utley speaks

It's 5:30 and its usually time for the football fix!  However, today's Football Fix was interrupted with Phillies 2B Chase Utley speaking to the media in the Phillies dugout.  Utley says "its a possibility" that he will be activated on Wednesday.  He doesn't feel much pressure in returning to the lineup and his knees feel the best since the injury.  Utley is due to finish up his rehab assignment tomorrow night for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.  If all goes well, Utley will be activated and bat third in the lineup Wednesday night.
