The Phillies may have a surprise or two in their back pocket ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.  While the Phillies have been splitting the catcher position between young players Andrew Knapp and Jorge Alfaro, the Phillies might be interested in picking up a veteran catcher to help guide the young team down the stretch.  He is an All-Star, too.

Wilson Ramos of the Tampa Bay Rays:

Ramos would be an immediate deep upgrade for the Phillies.

The right-handed Ramos is batting .297 for the Rays, with an .834 OPS and 14 home runs.  That OPS would rank second in last night's Phillies lineup and Ramos would represent a tremendous boost.  Ramos has a 2.4 WAR.

It is unclear at this time if either Knapp or Alfaro would be in the deal.  Alfaro could still be the long-term solution for the Phillies behind the plate, perhaps being mentored by Ramos for the rest of the season.  Alfaro cannot be optioned to the minor leagues, but Knapp has one minor-league option remaining, should he not be in the deal.
