The Phillies remain open to adding a veteran starting pitcher.  But could they possibly end up with one of the top pitchers on the market?  According to a report on Tuesday morning, they are at least discussing the possibility.

Jake Arrieta are talking:

Arrieta is represented by Super Agent Scott Boras.  Since camp has already begun, Arrieta may be running out of options.  The strategy for the Phillies, then, could be to go for a short-term deal that will benefit the club later in the form of a trade later in the season.

We have previously discussed that Arrieta could fall into the Phillies' lap, thanks to a shortage of landing spots for the veteran starter and relationship he has with the Phillies front office.  Arrieta's best potential suitor may have been the Chicago Cubs, who ultimately signed Yu Darvish to a six-year contract and are out of the running for Arrieta's services.

This is by no means an indication the Phillies are looking to sign Arrieta at all costs.  But with a lot of money available to spend, this is an opportunity that could develop into one they may not wish to pass up.  Stay tuned.
