Football finally returned in all its glory throughout the region on Friday evening. The Cape-Atlantic League kicked off the 2012 season with a slew of sensational matchups.

Holy Spirit, led by new coach John Iannucci, traveled to Hammonton High School. The clash between two perennial powerhouses was the 97.3 ESPN FM Game of the Week and it was a back-and-forth battled filled with unpredictability,

The Blue Devils prevailed 22-20 in an overtime thriller that featured plenty of memorable moments. Mike Gill, host of the Sports Bash was on hand for the contest, calling play-by-play. He joined us on The South Jersey Sports Report to recap a wild evening in Hammonton.

Cedar Creek looked rather comfortable in its Cape-Atlantic League debut. The Pirates ran over the Red Raiders at Ocean City High School on the way to a 47-0 victory.

Cedar Creek coach Tim Watson joined the show to discuss his team's commanding performance.

Reporter Tom Williams watched the Pirates defeat Ocean City and he stops by to examine various results from the region's opening night of football action.

Egg Harbor Township coach Tony DeRosa led his Eagles to a hard-fought win over Oakcrest. He joined us to discuss what went right for EHT in the opener.

Of course, other fall sports have returned to action. Press of Atlantic City reporter Brittany Grugan called in to highlight the contenders and surprise teams we should keep an eye on in 2012.
