The odds were already stacked against the Flyers when they faced the President's Trophy winners, the Washington Capitals, in the first round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it turned out to be a much closer series than the results showed. Defenseman Brandon Manning and goalie Michal Neuvirth were placed on injured reserve. Specifics of the injuries was not disclosed, but both will be out a minimum of seven days as a result. To fill out the roster, the Flyers have recalled defenseman T.J. Brennan and goalie Alex Lyon from the Phantoms.

The Flyers had 37 shots to 27 for the Avalanche, and came close to ending the game on numerous chances. Ultimately, the game took a shootout to decide, but it was a classic case of near misses and little bounces going the wrong way that did the Flyers in. Here is the Postgame Review.

With two quick strikes, the Flyers managed to force overtime. That was certainly a moral victory, but the satisfaction of a late rally was put to bed in the final seconds of overtime as the Coyotes scored to win their first game of the season after all by a score of 4-3. Here is the Postgame Review.
