Another tie! This week's 97.3 ESPN Athlete of the Week vote again ended in a tie. This time around, Holy Spirit's A.J. Dawson, Atlantic City's Amber Glen and St. Joe's Cody Sampson all took the honors.

Meanwhile, we have a new batch of local student-athletes who have proven themselves on the field this week. You can vote for your pick, and hear the winner announced on the South Jersey Sports Report with Tyler Donohue Saturday morning at 9:00.

Gerald Owens, Football, West Deptford - The junior running back rumbled for five rushing touchdowns in the South Jersey Group II championship game. His efforts helped the Eagles defeat Cedar Creek and solidified his status as a top 2014 recruiting prospect.

 

Trevor Gehring, Swimming, Cape May TechThe Hawks swimming program emerged as a surprise CAL conference champ last season and Gehring is a big part of the effort again this winter. He played a role in three winning events (100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay) as Tech edged Buena 89-81 in an early-season conference clash.

 

Taalib Gerald, Football, Holy Spirit - The Spartans dynamic playmaker caught a pair of touchdown passes as Holy Spirit cruised to its third consecutive state title. Gerald's scores keyed a Spartans offensive onslaught against top-seeded Immaculata. Holy Spirit prevailed 30-6.

 

Emily Barnard, Swimming, AbsegamiThe Braves standout performer is off to another strong season. Barnard claimed two individual victories (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and played a role on two winning relay efforts during a win over Our Lady of Mercy Academy.

 

Miles Pease, Football, St. Joe - St. Joe secured its fourth straight state title with a 36-0 victory over St. Mary's and it was Pease who paced the Wildcats. He rushed for 201 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown burst. Pease also hauled in an 18-yard scoring pass.
