Congrats to Southern Regional’s freshman hockey star, Ryan Rowland who took home last week’s 97.3 ESPN High School Athlete of the Week honors — the first time a hockey player has won!

We have a new batch of local student-athletes this week who have proven themselves worthy.

You can vote for your pick, and hear the winner announced on the South Jersey Sports Report with Tyler Donohue Saturday morning beginning at 9:00.

Gina Lewis, Basketball, Holy SpiritShe drained a game-winning jump shot in the Cape-Atlantic League championship game. Lewis, a senior, scored 14 points and put the Lady Spartans in front with two seconds remaining to defeat reigning league champion Sacred Heart.


Billy Ward, Wrestling, BuenaThe senior claimed his fourth district title, taking top honors in the 126 bracket. Ward is wrapping up a remarkable high school career. He shutout his opponent, 9-0, in the final bout.


Dayshawn Reynolds, Basketball, Atlantic CityThe senior guard gave Atlantic City an offensive lift, scoring 23 points as the Vikings repeated as CAL champions with a win over Middle Township. Reynolds caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers to go with six rebounds and four steals.


Tom Gattinella, Wrestling, St. AugustineGattinella secured his third district championship (102), helping the Hermits win another team title. He has won at a different weight class each year.


Kennedy Johnson, Basketball, Sacred HeartThe junior center was sensational in Sacred Heart’s South Jersey playoff opener, tallying her first career triple-double. Johnson scored 19 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and swatted away 10 shot attempts in a 42-30 win over Wildwood Catholic.


Isaac Clark, Track & Field, PleasantvilleClark claimed a Meet of Champions victory in 800 meters. The senior outpaced the state’s best with a time of 1:51.72. His twin brother, Jacob, won a state championship in the same event.


Braheme Days, Track & Field, BridgetonDays defended his shot put title at the New Jersey Meet of Champions His accomplishments earned him the opportunity to continue his athletic career at UCLA.


Lauren Holden, Basketball, Lower Cape MayThe sophomore sensation scored 32 points in the Caper Tigers’ playoff-opening win over Deptford. Holden came out firing, scoring 24 before halftime.
