Vote for This Week’s High School Athlete of the Week [4/25]
Congrats to Holy Spirit slugger Rick Hopkins for taking home last week’s 97.3 ESPN High School Athlete of the Week honors.
This week we have a new batch of local student-athletes who have proven themselves worthy in their respective fields.
You can vote for your pick below, and you can hear the winner announced on the South Jersey Sports Report with Tyler Donohue Saturday morning beginning at 9:00.
Tess Solazzo, Lacrosse, Ocean City - She continues to earn a reputation as one of the most dominant players in the state. Solazzo, who is committed to compete on the lacrosse field for Ohio State, was sensational in a victory over Millville. She scored nine goals, dismantling the Thunderbolts’ defensive attack throughout a 15-6 win.
Kenny Merlock, Baseball, Oakcrest - He played the role of hero against Cape-Atlantic League rival Hammonton. Merlock lifted the Falcons to victory with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. His walk-off shot gave Oakcrest an 8-5 win over the Blue Devils.
Dustin Guenther, Lacrosse, Absegami - He put on a phenomenal performance to lead the Braves to a 15-6 victory over Vineland. Guenther scored six goals and dished out three assists en route to setting the school’s all-time single-game record of nine points.
Emily DeMarco, Softball, St. Joe - Her seventh-inning grand slam gave St. Joe a stunning 5-2 victory over Millville. DeMarco’s timely long ball broke a late-game tie and delivered a memorable Wildcats win.
Roberto Rivera, Baseball, Millville – The pitcher turned in a gutsy effort against Egg Harbor Township. Rivera returned to the mound for nine innings of work before the Thunderbolts eventually broke through at the plate. He scattered four hits through nine frames and picked up the win as Millville prevailed 7-4 in a 10-inning thriller.
