As we get back into the swing of the school year in Jersey, a lot of school districts are having serious debates over cell phone usage in the classroom and whether or not to ban phones during the school day.

According to NJ.com, Jersey City is considering a ban on smartphones and cell phones during school hours, with the exceptions being at lunch and recess.
New Student Rules on Cell Phone Use in New Jersey Schools
Students, according to new rules being drafted, would have the option to either keep their phones in storage containers, turned off, or on airplane mode throughout the school day.
Consequences for Breaking Cell Phone Rules in NJ Classrooms

If students violate the rules, their smart device will be taken away until the end of the school day.
Seeing have cell phones now cost over $1,000 or more, I could see there being some issue with teachers confiscating these devices until the end of the school day, mainly for insurance reasons; what if the phone were to break while in the teacher's possession?
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also called for some sort of statewide ban or limitations on cell phones in the classroom.
Why Some Believe Cell Phones Should Be Restricted in NJ Schools
Personally, I believe that there should be some sort of ban or restriction on cell phones in the classroom.
Firstly, they are a distraction, plain and simple. Also, giving kids the ability to record and photograph while at school can lead to some kids ending up going viral on the internet when they don't want to.
I remember growing up, we didn't have cell phones in school, and we turned out just fine.
Then again, the world you and I grew up going to school in, and the world kids today are going to school in, are vastly different.. There are worries and concerns that we just didn't have back in the day.
Will Banning Cell Phones in NJ Schools Help or Hurt Students?
So, should cell phones be outright banned? It'll be interesting to see what districts end up doing, and see if it helps or just makes problems worse.
