Remember when you went to "the dollar store" and you could buy items for, you know, a dollar?

Times have changed, and Dollar Tree has announced that they're raising the previous $5 cap that was in place.

These price hikes have been ongoing. In 2021, the one-dollar cap became $1.25. In 2023, the max shot up to three dollars. Now, the CEO of Dollar Tree has announced that some items will have a price tag as high as seven dollars.

Surprise, surprise, inflation is a significant driving factor, but that's not the only reason.

According to Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling and reported by Yahoo! Finance:

most of Dollar Tree’s new shoppers in 2023 came from households earning more than $125,000 per year.

Due to this finding, Dollar Tree seeks to provide these shoppers with a more "relevant assortment" of products.

"Relevent assortment?" That's just a corporate way of saying nicer, higher-quality goods. Dollar Tree is getting boujee.

At first, I was a bit surprised that higher earners were more frequently shopping at Dollar Tree, but when you think about it, we all feel the pinch of grocery prices. Every dollar counts in this economy.

I want to mention that the $1.25 prices we've come to know and love are staying. The Dollar Tree CEO explained that higher-priced dog food, for example, will be mixed with the $1.25 steals.

Newer and more expensive Dollar Tree items will be phased in shortly. According to Yahoo! Finance, these products are expected to become more expensive soon.
