Northfield’s Electric Donuts: A Sweet Spot for Kids and Parents
Northfield native and businesswoman Carrie Washington was looking for a place to take her 4-year-old daughter, Harper, where she could get a specialty coffee and a donut, and Harper could happily pass the time in a play area.
Now she owns one.
Electric Donuts, at 200 Tilton Road in the Kensington Plaza in Northfield, opened recently, offering specialty, made-to-order donuts, La Colombe Coffee, and a play café for kids.
What Are Electric Donuts?
You can order one of their 20 specialty donuts or get creative and make your own with the icing and the toppings of your choice.
The donuts are fried up hot and fresh while you are waiting.
Washington's daughter's favorite donut has pink and blue icing, marshmallow drizzle, glitter dust, and mermaid candy. Harper's Mermaid is even named after her.
Carrie Washington raves about the Strawberry Shorty Cake, with Strawberry icing, vanilla drizzle, and vanilla cookie crumble.
When Washington, who is also the co-owner of Anthem Nightclub in the Quarter at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, and her business partner decided on opening a donut shop, they flew out to Seattle for a week of instruction on making donuts.
Electric Donuts also serves very decadent-sounding ice cream and donut boats, like the Sweet Dreams, mixing a cinnamon sugar donut with vanilla drizzle with vanilla Bassetts Ice Cream, and chocolate drizzle.
Electric Donuts is a 'Play Café '
A play café. What a great idea. Electric Donuts provides a safe, stimulating environment in the back of the store for kids to play while parents or caregivers relax nearby and enjoy a coffee and a donut.
Play café attendants oversee the children and keep the space clean. Electric Donuts is closed for deep cleanings every Monday.
Children can play for as long as two hours while parents are relaxing with a coffee.
Electric Donuts is also offering birthday parties and character events, and just had a very successful toddler Techno party where a DJ played kid versions of techno music and children and parents danced along.
