Ocean City Rescuers Save 2 People from Sailboat in Distress

An Ocean City rescue team of firefighters, police, and the beach patrol saved two people from a sailboat in distress on Saturday.

According to a Facebook post from the Ocean City Firefighters Association, at about 2:00 pm Saturday,  B-Platoon, Ocean City police, and beach patrol responded to 22nd Street and the Beach for a water rescue.

A sailboat was reported to be possibly in distress.

Officials say the sailboat, approximately 40’ in length, was found to be disabled, and in distress, with two people aboard. They say the vessel rapidly approached the sandbar and began getting impacted by surf broadside.

A water rescue team was launched and was able to contact the two on board. Once the vessel was grounded, firefighters rescued the two occupants.

One of the people aboard was taken to the hospital by medics and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A fast response and team effort lead to a positive outcome for the individuals involved.

 

Report Says Boat Ran Out of Gas

OCNJ Daily reports that the boat named “Scooch” is based in North Carolina.

Ocean City Police Chief Bill Campbell said the boat ran aground after running out of gas.

A towboat was expected to pull the sailboat back out during high tide.
