Spirit Airlines Cuts Hundreds of Flights in South Fla, Philly
You have probably heard that no-frills carrier Spirit Airlines is in financial trouble.
Spirit has not reported an annual profit in over 4 years and has lost more than $2.2 billion since the start of 2020. After several potential mergers fell through, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November.
Since Spirit Airlines is the way to travel by air for many in South Jersey, it makes sense to follow what the low-cost airline is doing at other airports to stem its losses even if the company hasn't cut any flights lately at ACY.
What you find is that Spirit is cutting hundreds of flights at popular Spirit destinations from ACY and at nearby Philadelphia International.
Time will tell if Spirit Airlines plans to cut flights at ACY, but to travelers who use Spirit to link to other destinations or who fly Spirit from Philly or South Florida airports, you will almost certainly notice these cuts.
Spirit is Cutting Flights
Since that bankruptcy filing, Florida Daily.com reports that Spirit will eliminate 84 scheduled direct flights from South Florida airports beginning in February 2025 compared to a year ago.
Spirit also plans to cut over 100 flights next month at Philly International Airport, according to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company.
Overall, the airline will cut over 5,000 flights by February 2025 compared to the previous year, and terminate 24 flights from several cities.
As of September 2024, Spirit Airlines no longer has a crew base or staff based in Atlantic City. The airline plans to sell off more planes and make additional cuts its workforce this year.
Spirit Flight Cut From South Florida Airports
Fort Lauderdale was the hardest hit South Florida airport, losing 64 flights, including direct routes to Phoenix and Los Angeles, and reduced services from various South American and Caribbean destinations.
The Atlantic City route continues from West Palm Beach but its Boston route was cut.
Tampa Bay International Airport lost 10 routes, including those to Atlanta and Philadelphia.
Spirit is cutting 17 flights at Miami International Airport.
Spirit Air Cuts at PHL
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Spirit is cutting more than 100 flights from Philly in February 2025 compared to 2024.
Some of those reduced Spirit flights were among the most popular flights from PHL in 2023, including Miami, Orlando, and Los Angeles.
Flights connecting PHL to Nashville, Las Vegas, Las Vegas, and Puerto Rico are also being reduced.
Spirit is also cutting service to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston for parts of the year.
