UPDATE:

The whale that washed ashore on Tuesday afternoon was a 20-foot minke whale.

The whale was found alive on Sunset Beach near the wreck of the SS Atlantus in the early afternoon and was still alive shortly before 3:30 pm.

It is likely the whale became beached because it was sick, according to Jeff Stewart of the Cape May Whale Watcher.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center arrived on the beach at about 4:30 pm Tuesday and decided to euthanize the whale.

Since January 2017, at least 140 minke whales have washed up deceased between Maine and South Carolina, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A whale washed up along the Delaware Bay in Lower Township on Tuesday afternoon.

It was first reported around 3 pm on Sunset Beach along the 500 block of Sunset Boulevard.

The group "Protect Our Coast" posted a video on Facebook of the whale at the water's edge, seeming to be struggling to breathe.

There was no immediate word on the size of the whale or if it was still alive.

Crews with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center are expected at Sunset Beach.
