Northfield, NJ, Police Report Spike in Car Burglaries, Thefts
Northfield, N.J. — Authorities in one Atlantic County municipality are reminding residents to lock their vehicles after two dozen burglaries and thefts have been reported over the past several weeks.
The Northfield Police Department says that since June 1st, their officers have responded to more than 24 motor vehicle burglaries and 7 vehicle thefts throughout the city.
Authorities took to Facebook Monday morning to share the news, saying,
It appears that Hyundai and Kia vehicles are once again being targeted for theft, and several of those vehicles have also been broken into. However, the vast majority of these incidents are crimes of opportunity, with thieves targeting neighborhoods where vehicles have been left unlocked or valuables have been left inside.
Don't Be the Next Victim
The department offered these tips so you don't become the next victim:
- Lock your vehicle doors
- Take your keys and key fobs inside; never leave them in your vehicle
- Remove or secure valuables and keep them out of sight
- Turn on exterior lighting or park in well-lit areas
- If you have security cameras, ensure they are functioning properly
- Report any suspicious people or activity immediately
