The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be closing in on naming their next general manager.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Athletics assistant general manager Dan Kantrovitz will get a second interview for the Phillies' general manager job.

Among the other names who have interviewed with the team are Cardinals director of player personnel Matt Slater, MLB VP of baseball operations Kim Ng, Indians VP of player personnel Ross Atkins, former Marlins GM Larry Beinfest, Royals assistant GM J.J. Picollo, and Angels assistant Matt Klentak.

 

Also per reports Phillies owner John Middleton’s top preference is former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington. However, ESPN.com MLB writer Jerry Crasnick indicated that Cherington does not want to dive right back into another GM opportunity.

 

The Phillies did not renew the contract of Ruben Amaro Jr. on Sept. 10 after seven years as the team's GM.
