Getting signed Mike Trout bat ‘legendary’ moment for ACIT student

MAYS LANDING — On April 27, ACIT security guard Terry Tully fetched Jacob Hackett and told him his presence was required at the main office. Hackett immediately got a lump in his throat. Getting called down to the office is not usually a good thing when you are a high school student. So there was a little bit of trepidation in Jacob's fingers as he guided his wheelchair down to the office.

Ocean City’s Mooney masters Mainland, fans 14

LINWOOD — Prior to Tuesday's game featuring rivals Ocean City and Mainland Regional, the crowd was buzzing about the chance to see Red Raiders stud pitcher Sean Mooney. After three innings, the only buzzing the Mainland faithful heard came from random bumble bees near the home dugout.

Absegami softball red hot, wins 7th straight

MAYS LANDING — Bobbie Beck was staring down a potential loss on Monday afternoon at ACIT. The tying and winning runs were at second and third with one out, and the host RedHawks had their Nos. 4 and 5 hitters coming up. Absegami's defense put Beck, the Braves' senior lefty ace, in a precarious position with a pair of catcher's interference calls and an infield error that had already led to a run.

But Beck has been in nerve-wracking spots before, and relied on her experience to get a pop-up and a ground out to seal Absegami's 3-2 win — the Braves' seventh straight — and allow her teammates to let out a collective sigh of relief.

Mainland baseball hangs on for key CAL American win

LINWOOD — Mainland Regional might not be playing its best baseball just yet, but the Mustangs have been finding ways to win, and that's good enough for coach Billy Kern.

The Mustangs scratched a pair of runs across in the bottom of the first, and Nick Atohi and Kyle Gerace made that lead stand up as Mainland held off Vineland 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

EHT boys track halts Oakcrest’s 48-meet CAL winning streak

Heading into this spring, the last time Egg Harbor Township's boys track team beat rival Oakcrest in a dual meet current seniors were in seventh grade. Every other Cape-Atlantic League team had similar results against the Falcons, as Oakcrest built up a 48-meet league winning streak since a loss to EHT in 2010.

The Eagles threw that monkey off their back with authority on Wednesday afternoon, beating Oakcrest 93-47 to end the Falcons' winning streak.

‘Gami boys lacrosse gets nine goals from Sibson, Collins in win over Cedar Creek

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — The Absegami boys lacrosse team needs to be playing its best this week with games against Mainland Regional and Ocean City looming. The Braves worked out some of the weekend kinks in an 18-8 win over Cedar Creek on Monday, and while the score makes it look like a convincing win, the Braves know there is plenty to clean up before taking on Mainland on Wednesday.

Ocean City boys lacrosse team makes big statement

OCEAN CITY — The Ocean City boys lacrosse team had heard all week about how good rival Mainland was, how this was the first time in school history that the Mustangs had started 6-0. They heard about Mainland's high-powered offense that came into Friday's game at the Tennessee Avenue Fields averaging nearly 17 goals per game.

The Red Raiders felt it was time to send a little reminder to the rest of the Cape-Atlantic League that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
