The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced Monday that the start of the high school sports season will be delayed.

11 days ago, the NJSIAA announced phase 1, which will begin on July 13 and run through at least July 26. During that time, summer workouts will be permitted but must follow certain conditions laid out by the NJSIAA.

As coronavirus cases and positive test rates increase around the county, a NJSIAA spokesperson declared that practice will not begin on  Aug. 3, but will now begin on Aug 10.

A timeline for a potential return to play has not been finalized, but games that were set for Week 0, which is the week of Aug 28-29, will no longer be played that week, if at all.

The new start date for the football season is now scheduled to begin Sept. 3-5.

In-person classroom instruction in New Jersey ended in mid-March, with the final athletic event taking place on March 12, as schools transitioned to online education to finish the 2019-20 academic year.

Most schools were scheduled to begin the year in on time, but things seem to be fluid in all areas.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared on Monday the postponement of indoor dining, showing things can change and remain very fluid.
