Over the course of the first 20 minutes, the frustration seemed to have fully settled in. A few calls didn't go their way, the Islanders capitalized off one of them, and the Flyers were trailing in the game and down a player as a result.

The second period was a complete turnaround. The Flyers scored three times to take over the game and the lead, before holding on late for a 5-3 win over the Islanders on Thursday night.

The first period was a fiery affair. Ryan Poehling left the game and did not return after a high hit by Maxim Tsyplakov on a penalty kill. No penalty was called on the play to negate an Islanders power play, and the Islanders subsequently took the lead as a result.

Bo Horvat scored from below the right circle to make it 1-0 on his 14th goal of the season.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 8-8.

The Flyers turned things on in the second to storm to the lead. The game was tied at 5:15, as Joel Farabee set up Sean Couturier for his eighth goal of the season to even things at one.

Just over four minutes later, the Flyers penalty kill came through. Travis Konecny made a great pass to Garnet Hathaway on a shorthanded two-on-one, and Hathaway fired a one-timer for his sixth goal of the season.

Just over four minutes after that, the Flyers struck again off the rush. Morgan Frost finished off a brilliant passing play for his 11th of the season to make it 3-1.

Through two periods, shots were 19-14 Flyers.

Just 30 seconds into the third, the Islanders cut the lead to one. Mathew Barzal scored his fifth of the season on a two-on-one to make it a one-goal game.

The Flyers responded at 5:16 of the third. Off a face-off, Cam York fired a shot past Ilya Sorokin to make it a two-goal game again with his fourth of the season.

On a power play late in the third, the Islanders cut the lead to one again as Anders Lee deflected a Horvat shot to make it 4-3 with 2:44 to play. But Noah Cates iced the game with an empty-net goal with 1:12 to play.

Sam Ersson made 26 saves on 29 shots in the win. Sorokin made 19 saves on 23 shots in the loss.

Konecny had three assists. Couturier and Farabee each had two points. Horvat had two points for the Islanders.

The Flyers conclude a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon against the New Jersey Devils at 12:30 p.m.
