These 3 Phillies Should Have Been Selected for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game
The 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played in Atlanta on July 15th and the initial rosters were announced this weekend to simultaneous applause and boos from Baseball Fans online.
With a record of 53-37 heading into their game in San Francisco on Monday Night, the Philadelphia Phillies have the third-most wins in the National League. But the Phillies only have two players who were selected to the initial 2025 NL All-Star roster:
-Pitcher Zack Wheeler
-Designated Hitter Kyle Schwarber
There are seven National League teams with three or more All-Stars but only two have more wins than the Phillies (Dodgers and Cubs). Both of the Phillies' NL East Rivals, the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, each have three players who were named all-stars on Sunday.
Also, three NL West Teams with fewer wins than Philadelphia have multiple All-Stars:
-Giants have 49 wins (3 All-Stars)
-Padres have 48 wins (3 All-Stars)
-Diamondbacks have 44 wins (3 All-Stars)
So let's break down who the biggest Phillies' All-Star snubs are, and which players I would remove from the 2025 National League All-Star Roster.
The Three Phillies Who Were 2025 All-Star Snubs
*Shortstop Trea Turner
The Phillies' Shortstop has the most Hits in the National League (109) and is 10 ahead of the two guys in second place. Neither Austin Riley or Luis Arraez were selected for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game either.
Turner is also tied for third-most Stolen Bases (22), and only 12 NL Hitters have a better Wins-Above Replacement (3.1) than the Phillies Shortstop. But the combination of Players voting and MLB roster decisions has shut out Turner from the All-Star Roster.
The Athletic and Fox Sports Insider Ken Rosenthal highlighted Trea Turner being snubbed for the All-Star Game on the Foul Territory YouTube Show:
"Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop, outstanding offensive season, much improved defensively. I had him on my (All-Star) team, and he did not get picked to the (2025) All-Star team. Now, Trea Turner could have been the third shortstop with (Francisco) Lindor and Elly De La Cruz. But instead, MLB in this particular case, named Matt Olsen as a third First Baseman.
Now, Matt Olsen was not good through May 15th, but has been really good since (with) a near a thousand (On-Base Plus Slugging). That said, I know Matt Olsen is a hometown guy, going to play in Atlanta, but Trea Turner arguably should be the starting shortstop. (But the) fans didn't elect him that way, of course, but he's a guy who, if you look at his fWAR (Fielding Wins Above Replacement) compared to the other shortstops, he is way up there, and the other guys are not. So, Trea Turner, he gets snubbed."
Who Trea Turner Could Replace on the NL ASG Roster: Corbin Carroll has 20 Home Runs but also has a worse Batting Average (.247), On-Base percentage (.331), Stolen Bases (10), and Doubles (13) compared to Trea Turner. The Diamondbacks already have two players on the team (Eugenio Suarez and Ketel Marte) so there's no good reason for Carroll to be on the team over Trea Turner.
*Pitcher Ranger Suarez
Even though the Phillies Left-Handed Pitcher has not played in enough games or thrown enough innings to "qualify" for the MLB Statistical Leaderboards, it doesn't change the reality that Ranger Suarez has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball.
Since allowing seven runs in his first start of the 2025 MLB season, Suarez has only allowed 3 runs once over the last 11 games. His 1.99 ERA is the second-best in the National League and his 1.026 would be fifth-best among NL Pitchers.
Who Ranger Suarez Could Replace on the NL ASG Roster: Robbie Ray has a lower WAR, a worse WHIP and ERA compared to the Phillies' Lefty Starter. Ray also 12 Quality Starts in 18 Opportunities while Ranger has 10 QS in 12 opportunities. The Giants have two other pitchers already on the All-Star Team (Logan Webb and Randy Rodriguez) so was Ray really a necessary pick?
*Pitcher Cristopher Sanchez
If you are someone who wants to use Ranger Suarez's "only 12 games started" against his candidacy for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, I will present now the resume for the Phillies' other stud left-handed pitcher.
Sanchez has the third-best Wins Above Replacement (3.7) among NL Pitchers, along with the seventh-best ERA (2.68), and only seven National League Pitchers have more Quality Starts (11). The Phillies have won 13 of his 17 starts this season, tied with Zack Wheeler (13) for most starts won by Philadelphia this season.
Who Ranger Suarez Could Replace on the NL ASG Roster: As MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal stated on the Foul Territory YouTube Channel, Major League Baseball wants as many Braves in Atlanta as possible for the All-Star Game. Chris Sale before sustaining a Fractured Rib had fewer Quality Starts, lower WAR, and a worse WHIP compared to Sanchez this season. MLB could have announced Sale as an All-Star and immediately announced an "Injury Replacement" on Sunday, but they decided not to.
Two of the three Phillies All-Star Roster snubs made the list of highest selling Phillies' Jersey during the 2024 MLB season:
