Eagles Add Playmaking Cornerback Caelen Carson in 2024 Mock Draft
It's never too early to start looking at the NFL Draft, and while the Eagles' season is off to a 2-0 start, there are things I am sure they will look to fix in the offseason.
The Eagles are aging in the secondary and have already suffered a major injury with slot corner Avonte Maddox likely done for the rest of the season. How many more seasons will veteran Darius Slay and James Bradberry continue to play at a high level?
For that reason, NFL writer Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports thinks the Eagles will take a cornerback in the first round this season, selecting Wake Forest cornerback Caelen Carson with pick No. 30.
Given the ages of Darius Slay and James Bradberry, the Eagles go with a twitchy, playmaking cornerback here.
So far in three games this season Carson has made 12 tackles and broke up two passes so far this season after making 22 tackles, one for loss, and seven pass breakups in 2022.
The Eagles definitely could use more talent at the corner position behind their two starters and could be looking for a new slot corner with Maddox hurt again, and a free agent after the season.
This Eagles went with Mario Goodrich last week against the Vikings in the slot in place of Maddox.
"He got thrown in the fire there, unexpectedly I'm sure for him. But that's a great lesson for everybody to always be prepared, having that-next-man-up- mentality," Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai on Wednesday.
"I thought he got better as the game progressed. There were some motion things like that early that he kind of just had to feel and settle in there a little bit and gain some confidence."
So adding another talented cornerback to the room would be a big help for 2024.
