PHILADELPHIA (973espn.com) - The Eagles are earmarked for the postseason after things broke their way on Sunday but not without at least some murkiness surrounding the quarterback position.

Nick Foles was forced to leave the 24-0 shutout over Washington early in the fourth quarter on Sunday with what was described as a chest injury. Early indications were bruised ribs, a diagnosis confirmed Monday morning with further testing, according to NFL Network.

And that puts Foles online to start Sunday in Chicago against the Bears' ferocious front, which included two All-Pro-level players in Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks.

Doug Pederson confirmed the news at his Monday afternoon press conference although did not go into detail on what the tests showed just that Foles was "clear."

The fact that Foles actually spoke after the triumph over the 'Skins was actually a positive sign because if the Eagles felt the injury was more serious they would have kept the reigning Super Bowl MVP under wraps. Foles admitted his chest area "is sore," and wouldn't confirm whether he would be on the field in Chicago.

"I’m sore," Foles said. "We’re going to find out more about what’s going on in the morning (on Monday)."

A negative report would have sent the position into flux again with the decision to move back to Carson Wentz, who is in the midst of what has been described as a three-month recovery for a stress injury in his back, vs. throwing Nade Sudfeld to the wolves.

Wentz hasn't practiced since the last game he played, a 29-23 overtime loss to Dallas on Dec. 9 and Sudfeld has thrown just two passes this season as the third-string QB.

Foles has already helped save the season with three straight wins in place of Wentz, setting records along the way like the franchise-best passing yards performance against Houston and the 25 straight completions against the Redskins, which matched the NFL standard.

Now he will try to put together his second consecutive storybook postseason, starting against the most dangerous pass rush in the game with ailing ribs.

Sounds like the latest great script for a player who keeps confounding the critics.

"My goal is to be out there and play," Foles said.
