As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to kickoff the 2026 NFL season this Sunday, most of the media focus and fan conversations have been about the offense. With another new offensive coordinator, Quarterback Jalen Hurts is back under the microscope to see how he performs now that Philadelphia's Offensive Coordinator is former NFL Quarterback Sean Mannion.

But the biggest under-the-radar storyline for the Eagles heading into this season is the state of the defense. With three new starters, and three players returning to action after offseason surgeries, Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio has some matchup challenges heading into the matchup with the Washington Commanders.

While Defensive Tackle Jalen Carter, Linebacker Jihaad Campbell, and Safety Andrew Makuba have been full participants at Training Camp and game, there is another Eagles defensive starter who will be unavailable to play in NFL Week One.

Only One Eagles Player Ruled Out versus Washington

After being acquired by Philadelphia in exchange for two 3rd-round NFL Draft Picks, new Pass Rusher Jonathan Greenard was absent for most of Training Camp after he suffered a pectoral injury. DC Vic Fangio never spoke with any real confidence that the 29-year-old former Pro Bowl selection would be on the field for the start of the 2026 NFL season.

The Eagles official injury report ruled out Greenard for Sunday's game, and he is the only Philadelphia player unavailable versus the Washington Commanders. Without Greenard, the Eagles will see more playing time for Nolan Smith, who is looking to bounce back from a disapointing 2025 season.

Eagles Rookie Tight End Eli Stowers is listed as Questionable for Sunday's game with a Hamstring Issue. The second round pick from Vanderbilt was not expected to have a role in the offense early on this season with Dallas Goedert, EJ Jenkins, and Johnny Mundt ahead of him on Philadelphia's Depth Chart.

Even though the Washington Commanders have no players with any injury designation heading into Sunday, they still will be short-handed against the Eagles. Starting Left Tackle Laremy Tunsil and reserve Cornerback Trey Amos are both starting the season on Injured Reserve, which means Washington will be lacking depth on both the Offensive Line and Defensive Secondary this Sunday.
