When the Flyers placed two players on waivers on Monday when only one needed to be to reach the 23-man roster limit, it was certainly a bit of a head-scratcher.

Some clarity was provided on Tuesday when the noon waiver deadline passed. The Flyers claimed goalie Calvin Pickard off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Pickard appeared in one NHL game for the Leafs in 2017-18, allowing four goals in an overtime loss. He had a 21-9-1 record with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL last season, posting a 2.31 GAA and .918 save percentage.

Pickard played three seasons for the Colorado Avalanche from 2014-2017. In his three seasons with the Avalanche, Pickard had a 28-44-6 record with a 2.77 GAA and .914 save percentage.

The move leaves the Flyers with three goalies on the roster, meaning a corresponding move will likely be made involving Anthony Stolarz in the coming days.

Both Dale Weise and Taylor Leier cleared waivers on Tuesday, which means they can be sent to the minors.

The Flyers open the 2018-19 season on Thursday night against the Vegas Golden Knights at 10 p.m.
