Flyers Face Familiar Problem: Goaltending Could Doom 2025 Season
The Philadelphia Flyers have plenty of time to add pieces for the upcoming NHL season, with the first step in the process on Friday Night with the NHL Draft. The team owns the sixth pick along with picks 22 and 31 in Round 1.
Flyers Acquire Trevor Zegras in Pre-Draft Deal
The team did make an interesting trade on Monday, adding Trevor Zegras in exchange for Ryan Poehling and two draft picks -- the No. 45 pick of the 2025 NHL draft and a fourth-round pick in 2026.
ESPN Grades the Trade: B+ for the Flyers
ESPN.com gave the Flyers a B+ for the trade, with the team hoping he can regain the form that made him such an interesting prospect.
Zegras is a two-time 20-goal scorer who has also authored a pair of consecutive 60-point seasons. That could give the Flyers, who finished 24th in goals per game, another player who can score while creating opportunities for those around him.
The team can begin adding players in free agency starting July 1st at noon, and Bleacher Report listed the biggest offseason priority for each team heading into free agency.
Bleacher Report’s Top Concern: Goaltending Stability
The one area that Bleacher Report thinks is the biggest priority for the Flyers this offseason? The same has it has been for years: goaltending stability.
Defensive Metrics Wasted by Poor Net Play
Despite having some of the best defensive and 5-on-5 metrics in the NHL, the Flyers still badly regressed from where they were during the 2023-24 season due in large part to their goaltending.
The team has a solid, but not spectacular, goalie in Sam Ersson, but lacks depth behind him with neither Ivan Fedotov nor Aleksei Kolosov showing much promise last season.
So could the Flyers add someone to pair with Ersson, or even get someone that would bump him to the No. 2 role on the team? We will see what the Flyers' plans are starting on Tuesday.
Three names to consider include: New Jersey's Jake Allen, San Jose's Alexander Georgiev, and Calgary's Dan Vladar would all likely be backups to Ersson in free agency.
Here is a list of the free agent goaltenders that will be available starting July 1.
