Frank Turner Steps Down as Pleasantville Boys Basketball Coach
Middle Township head boys basketball coach LaMarr Greer announced he was stepping down on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday night, Pleasantville head coach Frank Turner also announced he was stepping down as the Greyhounds' leader.
Turner, a 2006 Atlantic City High School graduate, went 24-29 in two seasons with the Greyhounds.
Reflecting on Two Seasons with the Greyhounds
"I enjoyed my time at Pleasantville," Turner told me in a text message on Tuesday night. The kids made me realize how much I truly love coaching."
Turner told me about a win he had over ACIT during his first season, recalling how hard the team played in the game and how the Pleasantville fans showed their support for the team and the kid.
"The unity between the players and fans showed what Pleasantville basketball deserves to look like from a high-energy perspective," Turner said.
From Atlantic City Legend to Head Coach
A standout player with the Vikings, Turner took over the Greyhounds program, which offered a big challenge and lacked stability.
"We progressed daily and yearly," Turner explained. "Especially this last season. Fighting through the adversity of losing players throughout our season, all the way up to the playoff games. Pleasantville has always been known to be a fighting team, and I believe they showed that consistently for two years as they learned a different style of basketball.
Turner is a well-known figure in the South Jersey basketball community, leading the Vikings to their first-ever State championship during the 2004-05 season, going 74-17 during his time at Atlantic City.
He went on to play collegiately at Canisius University and had a professional career that brought him to Belgium, Germany, and more European locations during his pro career.
After going 9-17 during this first season, the Greyhounds went 15-12 this season, winning a NJSIAA playoff game in the process.
"I believe I left them better than they were when I came in, and I believe they can keep it going with the kids coming in," said Turner.
While turner was not ready to discuss what is next for him, he said he will not be coaching someplace else at this time.
