South Jersey Rallies Around Injured Police Officer, 26
A fundraising effort has been started to help Middle Township Police officer Austin Kapurelos, 26, who was struck by a car while conducting a motor vehicle stop on Friday, Oct. 16th.
The rookie Middle Township cop had pulled a car over on Route 47 south near Wildwood Boulevard shortly after 10 pm, according to the Middle Township Police Department.
As he was finishing with the car stop, he was struck by a passing car driven by Lucio Lopez-Perez, 36, of Erma.
Lopez-Perez remained at the scene and was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, violating public health and safety law, and multiple other traffic offenses.
Police saw two open beer cans in Lopez-Perez's vehicle and said he admitted to drinking throughout the day, according to court documents.
Officer Kapurelos was transported to AtlantiCare Medical Center, where he was placed in “critical but stable condition,” according to the police department.
A Fundraiser is Helping the Kapurelos Family
Kapurelos sustained multiple fractures requiring surgery, though family members report he suffered no internal injuries.
As he continues his recovery, the Middle Township community is rallying around the young officer and his new wife.
A fundraiser is being organized to help the couple manage the unexpected financial burden resulting from his injuries.
"Her whole world’s been thrown upside down," Tony Kapurelos said of his daughter-in-law.
He said she is grateful for the outpouring of support.
"She wanted to convey that she appreciates all the support from the community and especially the Middle Township Police Dept.," he said.
How To Help Officer Kapurelos
During this difficult time, various South Jersey police organizations are helping to collect donations to support Austin and his family.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, is a meaningful way to show your support and remind Austin and his loved ones that they are not alone.
The fundraising is being handled privately to ensure that the officer's family receives all of the money donated.
