Vineland Woman Guilty in Girlfriend’s Hit-and-Run Death
A Vineland woman was found guilty on Friday of homicide and other charges in the 2024 hit-and-run death of her on-again, off-again girlfriend she had been with that night.
What happened between Breanna Rowley, now 24, and Caroline Bump, 21, on Oct. 22, 2024 isn't clear, but it apparently ended with Rowley driving into her friend on the road and leaving her to die.
The police say that Rowley and Bump were dating at the time of the incident. police said.
Brenna Rowley was found guilty of homicide, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and other charges in the death of Caroline Bump.
The Night in Question
The Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office said the two women had been in a turbulent relationship since 2022 that had a “significant history of domestic violence,”.
They say Rowley hit Caroline Bump at a high rate of speed while she was standing in the road and then drove off without helping her or reporting the incident.
Surveillance video showed Bump attempting to flag down Rowley’s vehicle moments before she was struck. Bump was thrown 50 to 75 feet by the impact, which ripped off her shoes and some of her clothing, prosecutors said.
Three days later, Rowley was arrested.
Police say Rowley also tried to cover up the damage to her car and tried to avoid being found.
A passing driver found Bump's body in the street hours later.
The Trial and the Sentencing
The trial was moved from Cumberland County to Atlantic County because Bump worked for the state judiciary in Cumberland County.
Sentencing for Rowley is scheduled for Jan. 5.
