United States Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-06-NJ) is the Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Pallone Has Been Unwavering In His Support For Keeping AM Radios In Cars

For a number of years, there has been an effort to take AM radios out of new cars.

This is wrong for many reasons. Most importantly, at times of crisis, the AM radio provides vital information during natural disasters and other emergencies.

On October 27, 20212, our Townsquare Media South Jersey radio stations stayed on-air throughout one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the state of New Jersey.

Potential Life-Saving Dialog

We remained on-air on back-up generators, powered by gasoline when the entire region lost electrical power during this massive super storm.

We were able to provide potential life-saving information, in real time. We were a life line to the communities that we serve.

For example, we provided advanced information to the public that a tornado was heading toward Longport, New Jersey.

We took on-air calls from citizens who shared shares happening in their community … many called-in because they were rightfully afraid of what was going on and fears of the unknown.

We also presented important public officials with real time updates regarding the impact of the super storm.

Congressman Pallone Has Been A Champion On This Important Issue

Pallone understands how important AM radio remains. In many rural, smaller markets … AM radio remains the major way that many Americans receive news and information.

Pallone’s AM Radio Legislation

Directs the the United States Department of Transportation to require automakers to include AM radios in all new automobiles.

This will enable people to receive vital information, alerts, etc.

During Times Of Emergencies

During times of crisis, the AM car radio is the only way to obtain vital information. During Super Storm Dandy and other times … people would go to their car in order to learn what was going on.

Congressman Pallone Said:

Today's markup moves us one step closer to protecting a service that millions of Americans rely on every day. During Superstorm Sandy and countless other emergencies, AM radio kept New Jersey families informed when other systems failed. AM radio is not only a forum for diverse community programming, it's also an essential public-safety tool, and I'm committed to seeing this legislation through to the finish line, said Pallone.

The AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act of 2025 Will:

  • Require automakers to maintain free, easily accessible AM radios in all new vehicles sold in the United States.
  • Mandate clear disclosure if a vehicle lacks AM access before the requirement takes effect.

Pallone has been working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring this important measure to the floor for a vote by the full House.
