Extra Points: 3 local boxers in action Saturday Night
By DAVID WEINBERG
Pleasantville boxer Francisco Rodriguez has gotten off to an impressive start in his professional career.
The 21-year-old lightweight won his first seven fights by knockout or TKO, including three first-round stoppages.
The Pleasantville High School graduate will try to keep that streak intact on Saturday, when faces Mexico’s Ivan Monroy (11-9, 10 KO’s) in a scheduled, six-round bout at Hard Rock Atlantic City.
Rodriguez is among three local fighters on the card, which is being promoted by Alex Barbosa’s R&B Promotions. Unbeaten Mays Landing heavyweight Rodney Brooks and Atlantic City cruiserweight Christian Figueroa will also be fighting.
Brooks (4-0, 3 KOs), a 38-year-old former professional basketball player and Oakcrest High School grad, will take on Anthony Woodson III (1-3, 1 KO), of Crown Point, Indiana in a four-rounder. This marks Brooks’ second fight of the year following a four-year layoff.
Brooks ended his hiatus with a first-round knockout over Lisandro Perez (0-2), of Putnam, Connecticut that happened three months ago.
Figueroa, brother of unbeaten super-welterweight Justin Figueroa (who himself won his last fight two weekends ago at Tropicana Atlantic City), will be making his professional debut against Perez in a four-rounder Saturday.
Those fights are part of a 14-fight card that marks Barbosa’s fourth show of the year at Hard Rock. This one is the first being held at the larger Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena after three outings at Sound Waves.
Doors open at 5:45 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 6:30. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and at the Hard Rock box office.
