Which Marvel Heroes Best Match Philadelphia Sports Stars
A multi-billion-dollar movie franchise, the Avengers films have proved to be the most profitable of the Marvel Studios films released over the last 20 years. The re-release of Avengers: Endgame wasn't just an opportunity to give Marvel Cinematic Universe fans some nostalgia, but the added scenes recalibrate the connections between the original 2019 film and the upcoming December 2026 release, Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Endgame Encore performed well its opening weekend, grossing $86 million globally, and proves the powerful mainstream popularity of these beloved characters whose origins are in comic books that date back 60 years ago.
In the city of Philadelphia, the professional sports scene is stacked with their own mainstream stars and heroes that are beloved by Philly fans. The additions of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown added to the deep cast of stars featured MVP award winners (Joel Embiid, and Bryce Harper), world champions (Jalen Hurts, and Kyle Schwarber), and young stars (Tyrese Maxey, and Trevor Zegras), the four Philly sports teams have plenty of heroes for game day.
So What If Philly Sports Stars Were Marvel's Avengers?
Combining my deep comic book geek knowledge with my love for Philadelphia sports, here are my 14 comparisons between the Avengers heroes on the big screen and the biggest stars from the field, court, and ice who play at the South Philly Sports Complex:

*Bryce Harper is Iron Man (Tony Stark)
Both men are childhood prodigies who are perceived by some as egotistical, but both will do whatever it takes to win. Harper is one of the most gifted baseball players of the last 20 years, and like Tony Stark, has come up clutch to lift the Phillies in the regular season, and postseason. Both men are heroes for their teammates and their cities. There is pressure and expectations on these men, but they still rise to the occasion.

*Kyle Schwarber is Thor
Like the God of Thunder, Schwarber has epic power, and is beloved by both fans and teammates. Schwarber has almost a mythical background as this highly touted prospect before helping the Chicago Cubs break their 100-plus years World Series drought. Since coming to Philadelphia, Schwarber has been a prolific Home Run hitter, and is similarly feared by opposing pitchers like Thor with his enemies.

*Jalen Hurts is Black Panther
Both men are composed leaders whose intangibles are more valuable than their physical abilities. These men are winners, they are resilient, and even when they make mistakes, they find a way to bounce back to put their team in a poisition to be successful.

*Jalen Carter is the Hulk
Two physical forces of pure power, and are feared by opponents. Yet both can be undisciplined, and will not always have the best instincts on every play, but they have moments where their impact on winning is essential. At their best, both Jalen Carter and The Hulk are singular forces that cannot be stopped when they are focused, and they both care about their teammates.

*LeBron James is Captain America
Veteran experience, already has the resume and accolades, could have retired years ago, but are still leaders of their squads in any situation. LeBron James is arguably the most gifted basketball player of all-time, and his resume of winning is unparalleled. Captain America helped win World War Two, saved the planet from alien invasion, helped stop numerous villains over the decades, but he keeps coming back when his teammates call on him.

*Tyrese Maxey is Spider-Man
Everyone loves the Sixers star guard, with the youthful energy, passion, and relentless work ethic than only compares with one marvel superhero. Spiderman is one of the most physically gifted marvel heroes but most of his mistakes are because of his youth, and he is at his best when working with veteran heroes. Both Maxey and Spider-man serve as symbols of hope for their cities.

*Travis Konecny is Ant-Man
Both men are annoying and exasperate their opponents, but their teammates appreciate their abilities, and resilience. Konecy and Ant-Man don't fit the stereotypes for their jobs, but they are important members of their team thanks to their experience and skills.

*Joel Embiid is The Vision
One of the most unique talents on the court in the NBA today, Joel Embiid's uncommon skill set reminds me of Marvel Comics most unparalleled Avenger. The Vision is unlike any other superhero with his elite strength and evasive abilities, this Avenger does not fit the conventional molds for comic book heroes. Joel Embiid also does fit any stereotypes with his elite footwork, shooting touch, and unorthodox abilities to get open shots from almost anywhere on the basketball court. The Vision was the Most Valuable Hero in Avengers: Age of Ultron, like how Embiid was the 2022-23 NBA MVP award winner.

*Saquon Barkley is Shang-Chi
He might not be consistently named among the top three running backs in the NFL, but everyone knows that Barkley is one of the best, and he is as dangerous as any offensive player in the league. Shang-Chi doesn't have a resume of other Marvel heroes, but his fighting skills, athleticism, and mystical powers rival almost every other superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

*Trevor Zegras is Doctor Strange
A wizard with the puck, the Flyers Forward scores goals that both teammates and opponents are amazed by. Doctor Strange does not have the strength or athleticism of his fellow heroes, but his intelligence and mastery of his craft makes him one of the most formidable superheroes. Both Zegras and Doctor Strange have the mastery of their skills that makes them some of the most dangerous in their arenas.

*Zack Wheeler is Rocket Raccoon
Both are elite strategists, and veterans of numerous showdowns. Both Wheeler and Rocket will outwork, outplan, and outwit their opponents. They get overlooked at times, but they are extremely valuable to their teams, and they are both very competitive.

*Jhoan Duran is Star-Lord
They are known for their music and energy, but both Duran and Star-Lord are winners who possess firepower and resilience. Both men are extremely competitive, and their identities are built around their entrance music.

*Jaylen Brown is War Machine
Trustworthy, reliable, loyal, and determined teammates, both Jaylen Brown and James Rhodes are overlooked and underappreciated heroes. Yes, War Machine is not as famous as Iron Man, or as popular as Captain America, but he always comes in clutch like Jaylen Brown. if dependability was a superpower, Jaylen Brown and War Machine would be more often named among the elite superheroes and superstars.

*Quinyon Mitchell is Hawkeye
Both men are overlooked because of their larger-than-life teammates, but Quinyon Mitchell and Hawkeye are very important to their team's success. Named an AP First Team All-Pro in 2025, Mitchell has established himself as one of the best Cornerbacks in the NFL. Like Clint Barton's Hawkeye, Mitchell's strengths are based on his technical skills, composure in high-pressure situations, precision, and always learning from their mistakes to constantly stay at the top of their game.
