New Details about Major Traffic Detour Coming to South Jersey This Fall

One of the most important upcoming New Jersey Road Work projects will begin this fall on State Highway Route 50. One of South Jersey's Coastal Evacuation Routes features a 65-year-old bridge that needs to be replaced.

Back in May of this year, NJ Governor Mikie Sherrill officially announced plans for the replacement of Route 50's Cedar Swamp Creek Bridge. This project has been petitioned for by South Jersey Officials over the last decade, and will finally begin the process of installing a new, modern bridge in Fall 2026.

As we enter the final month of the summer season at the Jersey Shore, we have more details about how the upcoming bridge replacement project will impact traffic around South Jersey.

Officials Confirm Details of Detours on Route 50 later this year

Cape May County Commissioners approved a Resolution to establish a Detour in conjunction with the start of the upcoming Cedar Swamp Creek Bridge replacement project.

State Highway Route 50 is one of the most important roads for both locals and visitors to New Jersey's southernmost county. The NJ Department of Transportation will replace the flat bridge with a high-arching bridge that will protect motorists who are traveling during bad weather conditions.

Multiple media reports confirm details of the temporary traffic signals that will be installed:

*Southbound Route 50 traffic will be directed to use Tuckahoe Road (County Road 631) to Tyler Road (County Road 616) and then return to Route 50.

*Northbound Route 50 motorists will be detoured to Tyler Road, then over to Tuckahoe Road before returning to Route 50.

*Southbound truck traffic will have to follow an extended detour east along Tuckahoe Road to Route 9 in Marmora, then travel south to where Route 9 intersects with Route 50 in Seaville.

County Road 631 (Tuckahoe Road) is the primary artery connecting Route 50 traffic traveling to and from Marmora, where many year-round South Jersey visit for the local ShopRite, CVS, Wawa Gas Station, and numerous small businesses. This is also a heavy traffic road for visitors to Ocean City during the summer months.

County Road 616 (Tyler Road) is a rural byway that connects motorists from Tuckahoe Road to the southern stretch of Route 50. Many local residents use Tyler Road as a more direct travel option to the plethora of small businesses located on Route 50.
The only problem with these detours is that both Tuckahoe Road and Tyler Road are one-lane each direction, so motorists can expect traffic delays and high-volume congestion starting in October or November this year.
