New Holy Spirit Girl’s Basketball Coach has Basketball in his Blood
Former Drexel Dragons basketball player Tim Whitworth was named the new Holy Spirit Spartans girls basketball coach back on May 6.
Whitworth spent the last two years working as an assistant under head coach Scott Bittner at Stockton University with the mans basketball program.
Whitworth was an outstanding player during his time with the Dragons, setting a school record with a .513 three-point field goal percentage in 2003-04. In 2004 Tim was an All-CAA Second Team selection, Whitworth finished his career with 1,039 points.
After his time at Drexel, he played professionally in Europe for 11 years from 2004-15.
"It was an experience in itself, Whitworth said about his time playing overseas. "The first couple weeks, I was ready to get back on that plane and head home, but I had a tremendous experience over there."
Coaching is in Whitworth's blood, he comes from a basketball family, he and his brother grew up in high school basketball gyms, his mother was a basketball coach and that's what made the fit at Holy Spirit a perfect fit.
"When I thought about this job, I know its a big time commitment, but the family feeling over at Holy Spirit is what sold me," Whitworth explained.
Whitworth is taking over a program that is building, and understands with a coaching change, challenges might follow, but hopes teaching the skills of basketball helps ease the transition.
While he says he doesn't really have a particular style, he says it all depends on what kind of talent he has on the roster.
"I'm big on skill development," Whitworth says. I'm big on the fundamentals of the game."
