New Jersey Makes List Of Fewest Gun Sales In The United States
Every Presidential Election season, one of the hot-button subjects that causes intense debate is Gun Control. People on both sides of the Political Divide have argued for decades about the amount of access people have to obtain firearms.
Depending on how you interpret the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, the right for US Citizens to own guns has been a staple of American Culture for centuries. Only in recent decades have government regulations been installed to prevent dangerous people from owning firearms.
Despite all the political dialogue about guns in recent years, only nine states require future gun owners to undergo basic gun safety training. Background checks for potential firearm sales are universal across the United States.
The researchers at the website 24/7 Wall Street gathered information to find out which states have the highest and lowest percentage of gun purchases. They accumulated data from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System and Population numbers from the Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates.
Where Does New Jersey Land In These Rankings?
The result of their research was ranking each state based on firearm background checks to population ratio. Four of the Ten States with the fewest Potential Gun Sales per Capita are located in the Northeast.
New Jersey is ranked on the list as the Third Fewest Potential Gun Sales Per Capita with 8.7 per 1,000 residents. The Garden State has the 16th fewest Total Firearm Background Checks in 2024 and the 4th Fewest Firearm Mortalities.
The real good news is only three states have a lower Firearms Mortality Rate than New Jersey. At 5.0 deaths per 100,000 residents, the states with a lower rate than New Jersey are Hawaii (4.5), Massachusetts (3.7), and Rhode Island (3.1).
What should be noted based on the research by 24/7 Wall Street, there is not a direct correlation between gun sales and firearms mortality rates:
*Nevada has the 9th Fewest Fewest Potential Gun Sales Per Capita but also has the 15th Highest Firearms Mortality Rate in the United States (18.9).
*New Hampshire has the 6th Most Potential Gun Sales Per Capita yet the state has the 9th Lowest Firearms Mortality Rate in America (10.1).
*Wisconsin has the 9th Most Potential Gun Sales Per Capita but has the 19th Lowest Firearms Mortality Rate in America (14.0).
