New MLB Mock Draft Has Chase Petty Heading to San Diego in Round One

Every time Mainland senior pitcher Chase Petty toes the rubber, it has become a must-watch event.

Radar guns regulatory hit anywhere from 95-100 miles per hour has the strikeouts continue to pile up.

The Mustangs right-hander regularly will throw in front of 20-30 scouts, keeping track of every pitch, right until the final out.  Soon he might be throwing in front of 20,000-30,000 fans, if everything falls into place, Petty could be a first-round pick in the upcoming MLB draft in July.

Petty, a University of Florida commit, will likely hear his name called on July 11 in the first-round, the big question is when.

In a recent MLB mock draft, Petty was slotted at No. 18 to the St. Louis Cardinals, this time around he fell a bit, but still is in round one, heading to the Padres at pick No. 27.

Petty's profile as a 6-foot right-hander with some effort in his delivery scare some clubs, though it’s hard not to love a fastball that reaches 100 mph with turbo sink and an upper-80s slider.

So far this season the 6-1, 185 pound Petty is 3-0 with 48 strikeouts and a 0.66 ERA and in 21 innings pitched.

As for the Phillies, who own the No. 13 pick, MLB.com has them passing on Petty for Boston College outfielder Sal Frelick.

This might be the floor for Frelick, whom many clubs believe will fit in the top 10 but aren't sure where. He's quicker but smaller and less powerful than Cowser.

The last time a local Cape-Atlantic League player was selected in the first-round was in 2009, when Millville's Mike Trout was the 25th pick by the Angels.
