Giroux Stays in Ottawa, No Reunion with Flyers

Casually dropped in among the chaos of the Philadelphia Flyers’ offer sheet to Leo Carlsson on Friday, there was a report that Claude Giroux was signing with the Flyers.

For a few days, there was nothing more on the Giroux front, as the Flyers started the waiting game on Carlsson’s offer sheet and the seven-day window for Anaheim to match. It seemed that any deal with Giroux was put on hold until there was a resolution there.

Now, there will be no reunion in Philadelphia. On Monday night, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Giroux would be returning to Ottawa for the 2026-27 season.

No official deal has been announced by the Senators, but according to PuckPedia, it is a one-year deal with a $2 million cap hit. There is also wide speculation that this could be Giroux’s final season, and after spending the last four seasons with his hometown team, it makes sense that Giroux would return. He certainly did consider Philadelphia as an option, but ultimately decided on Ottawa.

Giroux, 38, was drafted by the Flyers in the first-round of the 2006 NHL Draft and played 15 seasons in Orange and Black from 2008 to 2022. His Flyers totals are 291 goals and 900 points in 1,000 games.

Giroux was traded to Florida on March 19, 2022, along with Connor Bunnaman, German Rubtsov, and a 2024 fifth-round pick for Owen Tippett, a 2024 first-round pick (which was later traded to Edmonton), and a 2023 third-round pick which was used to select Denver Barkey. In 18 games with the Panthers, Giroux scored three goals and had 23 points.

Following the 2021-22 season, Giroux signed with Ottawa. Over the last four seasons, Giroux has 85 goals and 242 points in 327 games. He enters his 20th NHL season with 1,345 games played, 379 goals, and 1,165 points.
