The start of rookie camp in 2026 is a good time to reflect on how important many from this group were to the 2025-26 Philadelphia Flyers. In a matter of months, prospects like Denver Barkey, Alex Bump, and Porter Martone went from roster hopefuls to key contributors in a playoff run.

Once the Flyers had reached the playoffs, another of those prospects got his first taste of the NHL. Oliver Bonk, a 2023 first-round pick of the Flyers, made his NHL debut in Game 82 of the regular season.

The game itself was otherwise meaningless to the Flyers, who had clinched a playoff spot the night before. But largely fueled by a youthful lineup, the Flyers defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-2, that night. Bonk had an assist on Martone’s goal to open the scoring, then quickly added his first NHL goal.

It put the finishing touches on a big year of development for Bonk, his first professional season. Prior to the 2025-26 season, Bonk was among the leaders for the London Knights, alongside Barkey, who captained the Memorial Cup champion Knights in 2024-25.

Bonk had 10 goals and 40 points in 67 games in his first full OHL season and draft year. He followed it up with 24 goals and 67 points in 60 games in 2023-24 and had another seven goals and 16 points in 18 playoff games. In his final junior season, Bonk had 11 goals and 40 points in 52 games, and added another two goals and 14 points in 17 playoff games.

Upon making the jump to the Phantoms and professional hockey, Bonk went through an adjustment process, but settled in during the second half of the season. He didn’t debut until Dec. 6. He was held without a point through his first eight pro games.

In the first 23 games of his AHL career, Bonk had two goals and five assists for seven points. In the next 19 games, Bonk scored four goals and had 12 points.

Bonk’s first pro season could have ended with the feel-good NHL debut in the regular-season finale. But his potential role for the upcoming season is largely based on how his first pro season ended.

Bonk was in the lineup for Game 4 of the second round against the Carolina Hurricanes, his NHL playoff debut. He got the call over Emil Andrae and Noah Juulsen. Both are no longer with the Flyers, with Andrae getting traded to Toronto in June.

Part of Bonk’s competition to become a permanent member of the Flyers’ lineup was acquired in that trade. Simon Benoit will certainly be in the running for a regular lineup spot.

The Flyers also acquired David Jiricek at the trade deadline in March. Jiricek only played one game for the Flyers, also the regular-season finale, but the clock is ticking on the former sixth overall pick becoming an NHL mainstay.

That one final look at Bonk, in an elimination game no less, was already an indicator that he is a well-established part of this roster battle. As the team’s top defensive prospect, his future is just as much under the microscope as any. And as the next chapters of his career play out, now a second-year pro and with a pair of NHL games under his belt, he’ll be trying to find his way into an NHL lineup with more regularity.
