Sources: Eagles’ have fired Sean Desai
In a move that surprises no one, the Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Desai lost his playcalling duties after the teams' loss to Dallas, but remained on the staff, but is no longer with the team per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Desai was a defensive coordinator in Chicago and spent time as a defensive assistant in Seattle before landing the job in Philadelphia.
Desai was essentially stripped of his playcalling and replaced by Matt Patrica in hopes that the struggling defense would respond. Instead, it got worse.
Darius Slay explained the change like this:
Hardly ideal.
Per Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sirianni did the firing, indicating that his job is safe, but more changes could be coming to the staff.
So who are some options to replace Desei?
Dennard Wilson: Wilson was on the Eagles staff last year and passed over for the job. He landed in Baltimore to coach the secondary.
Wink Martindale: Martindale would be a fan favorite with an aggressive blitzing style. He resigned from the Giants after two seasons as their coordinator.
Jesse Minter:Minter was a candidate for the job last season, but was passed over, landing in Michigan, helping the Wolverines win the National Championship.
Per Dianna Russini from The Athletic, the team has reached out to Martindale and former Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.
Martindale would be a big change in philosophy for the Eagles' defense, which has used the Vic fango style of defense with Jonathan Gannon and Desai.
