Since first opening in 1978, the Cape May County Zoo has been one of the most popular attractions for South Jersey residents and visitors each year.

Over the last 45 years, the CMC Zoo population has grown from 70 animals to 550 animals. Thanks to donations in the 1980s and 1990s along with becoming AZA-accredited (The Association of Zoos and Aquariums), the Zoo has added numerous attractions including their African Safari Walk and Reptile House Exhibit.

In the aftermath of the World of Birds Aviary being closed in 2023, there has been a void at the Cape May County Zoo.  Even though some media outlets reported this was the "zoo's least-visited exhibit", for 25 years the World of Birds Aviary was one of the top attractions at the CMC Zoo.

Almost 20 months after the World of Birds exhibit closed, we now know what will be replacing it, and the latest project will bring new birds to the Cape May County Zoo.

Details About The Next CMC Zoo Exhibit

The Cape May County Zoological Society has announced plans for the Construction of a new, world-class habitat that will be the home to two breeds of birds from South America.

According to their website fundraiser page, the new habitat building will be the new home for 20 Humboldt Penguins and 30 Chilean Flamingos. Both animals are facing losses to their natural habitats because of overfishing and regional impacts on wetlands ecosystems.

There is no estimated target date for the construction of the new exhibit at the time of the writing of this article.  No information is currently available about the fiscal number for the CMC Zoological Society Fundraising goal.

Townsquare Media reached out to the Cape May County Zoo and CMC Zoological Society but received no reply to our requests for more information about the new habitat project, the new animals coming to the Zoo, how this project will impact the current zoo animals, or if there are any fundraising efforts to support the current zoo exhibits.
