When it comes to food, there are a ton of great spots in New Jersey, and down here in South Jersey.

Atlantic City and Cape May have plenty of great options, but what about some of the lesser known towns in our area?

While both great restaurants and food options, two Cape May county towns ranked among the 21 best in New Jersey that no one knows about according to NJ.com food writer Peter Genovese, who looked all over the state to find some hidden gems.

Last year the list had 25 towns, none of which appeared on the list this year. Those South Jersey towns included Vineland, EHT, Somers Point, Ventnor and Hammonton.

This year, both towns that made the list were from Cape May County, starting off with Lower Township.

Lower is home to the legendary Lobster House (which is not, contrary to what the rest of the world thinks, in Cape May), plus El Pueblo Taqueria, one of my favorite taco spots, and The Eat Well, with its eclectic and entertaining menu (try one of the Cubano sandwiches). Wing It made my N.J.’s best BBQ joints list. Lower very much has its own identity and restaurant scene. Long live Lower.

Put me on the list of people who wasn't aware that the Lobster House was in Lower Township - though looking at maps, I still can't verify that. Either way, there are plenty of great food options in Lower Township to try.

the other Cape May County town on the list was Wildwood.

Wildwood, like Seaside, is not considered a dining destination. Maybe because most folks think it’s just funnel cake, mediocre boardwalk pizza and even worse lemonade. You’d think Cape May County’s best restaurant would be located in Cape May, but it’s in Wildwood. One Fish Two Fish “does fish spectacularly well, and the scallops sampled on a recent trip could not have been fresher or more tender,” according to our writeup in our Greatest Restaurant in Each of N.J.’s 21 Counties story. Sam’s Pizza Palace, on the boardwalk, is Jersey pizza legend, and Joe’s Pizzeria makes a standout Sicilian. For Chinese, it’s Dragon House; try the Hong Kong seafood dish. Superb sticky buns can be found at Britton’s Gourmet Bakery, and Quincy’s offers the best lobster roll on any Jersey boardwalk. In next-door North Wildwood, recommended spots include Maui’s Dog House and Papelon Latin (formerly Giovanna’s).

Wildwood is definitely a spot that is changing and adding more and more options.  I was down at Trio in North Wildwood in the fall and really enjoyed it.  They have some really good BBQ right across the street from Trio, Wildwoods BBQ.

What are some of the towns that have some great restaurant that no one thinks about?
