
4-Goal 1st Leads Flames Past Flyers
The Calgary Flames entered Tuesday's game having scored just 18 goals in 10 games since making a blockbuster trade with the Flyers. They solved their scoring woes in a hurry.
Four goals in the first period, including three separated by 1:52, proved to be enough, as the Flyers five-game points streak came to an end in a 5-3 loss to the Flames at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flames got on the board first at 7:40. A point shot by Brayden Pascal was deflected by Connor Zary for his 11th goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Just 33 seconds later, Nazem Kadri scored off the rush for his 22nd goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Just 1:19 later, Zary scored from an angle for his second of the game and 12th of the season to make it 3-0. That was the end of Sam Ersson's night, allowing three goals on five shots.
Just 22 seconds later, the Flyers were on the board as Noah Cates scored his 14th of the season, setting a new career high.
The Flyers cut the lead to one at 17:11 of the period. Andrei Kuzmenko stole the puck at center ice and went into the offensive zone and fired a shot past Dustin Wolf to make it 3-2.
Just 18 seconds later, Yegor Sharangovich won a battle to get to a rebound and restore the two-goal lead for Calgary with his 12th goal of the season.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 12-12.
After six goals in the first period, there was only one tally in the second. At 16:33, the Flames extended the lead on a power play, as MacKenzie Weegar fired one from the high slot for his seventh goal of the season to make it 5-2.
Through two periods, shots were 23-21 Calgary.
The Flyers cut the lead back to two at 10:43 of the third. Matvei Michkov's shot was batted in by Sean Couturier scored his 10th goal of the season to make it 5-3.
Ivan Fedotov made 25 saves on 27 shots in relief. Wolf made 26 saves on 29 shots in the win.
Zary, Kadri, Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Morgan Frost each had two points for Calgary. Kuzmenko had a goal and an assist.
The homestand continues on Thursday night, facing the Winnipeg Jets at 7 p.m.
